5 Cool Puck Facts
Hockey’s history is full of interest tidbits, so we thought we’d share 5 cool facts about pucks:
Legend has it that hockey pucks were made from cow poop. The cow poop patty was frozen and used as a puck for games.
A hockey puck is a disk made of vulcanized rubber that is 1 inch thick and 3 inches in diameter. A hockey puck is also referred to as a "biscuit". To put the "biscuit in the basket" is to score a goal.
By the 1870s, pucks were square and made of wood as well as rubber.
Rubber pucks were first made by slicing a rubber ball, then trimming the disc square. The Victoria Hockey Club of Montreal is credited with making and using the first round pucks, in the 1880s.
Prior to 1906, Hockey pucks became the centre of contention, cuts, and bruises for players. This is because hockey pucks were placed on the ice between players who would use their hockey sticks to face-off. We can clearly see how this was unsafe. After 1906, the rules were changed and refs would, instead, drop the puck.
